There’s a Greek island in the Aegean Sea that holds a mysterious power. The people of this island seem live longer than anyone else in the world. Making it to 100 years of age is common among the residents.
Ikaria, is a Greek island in which people live the longest; located southwest of Samos. Also spelled Icaria, it derives it’s name from Icarus in Greek Mythology. There’s a couple of reasons that could contribute as to why residents are living so long.
Ikaria has a very active community. The community has regular get-togethers where they dance and sing together. Being with family and friends can really help out your heart. And that could be a proven fact, as people that live in Ikaria have less heart disease than their foreign counterparts. Beyond that, it’s said that their hearts are extremely healthy; and other diseases such as dementia, are rare.
Red wine is a part of most ikarian diets. Also, most Ikarian diets rely strongly on vegetables. Almost all food eaten in Ikaria is grown right there in the homeland. Beans, eggs, milk, fish, and vegetables is what the average diet is like.
It’s not easy to navigate around in Ikaria for those that are not familiar. With rough terrain, the people become accustomed to working hard and pushing their limits. Even those that are 100 years old are witty, and able to walk around freely. Most of the people in Ikaria don’t even retire, they see it as a way of life.
