Could certain smells increase cognitive ability? It sounds like a silly question. How could smells improve your memory? It really doesn’t sound logical at all. Yet, in reality there are smells that can increase our cognitive ability. Earlier this year, August of 2023, there was a study done by researchers on this subject at the University of California, Irvine.
Researchers took men and woman aged 60-85 without memory issues and conducted the study of if certain smells could increase cognitive ability. While the volunteers slept, researchers would have scented diffusers in the rooms spraying out a fragrance while they were asleep. One control group would have a light fragrance smell, while the other had a full-strength fragrance smell. There was a 226% increase of cognitive capacity compared to the other control group.
