Skittles has to be my favorite candy of all time. Although, there has been some recent controversy unfolding about skittles, which could change the way everyone views them. There’s currently a lawsuit going on with Mars, the owner(s) of skittles. The specifics within the case state that skittles are unfit for human consumption.
Apparently, skittles contain a known toxin called titanium dioxide. Allegedly, the company Mars claimed in 2016 that they would remove this toxin from skittles. Though this still has not happened. The lawsuit claims that the toxin is still being used in skittles products, which is dangerous for consumers; hence the lawsuit.
A spokesperson from Mars has said that the use of titanium dioxide complies with FDA regulations. I’m sure you’re wondering what’s the big deal with titanium dioxide anyways? Titanium dioxide is unsafe because of genotoxicity, it has the ability to change DNA. It can also cause brain and organ damage, as well as affect the liver and kidneys. Apparently, next month the European Union will ban titanium dioxide.
This isn’t something to freak out about in moderation, I suppose a pack of skittles wouldn’t do any harm. Although, if you are consuming a lot maybe it’s time to slow done or stop completely. This news does make me unhappy because it is my favorite candy, but we should all be aware of what’s going on.
