Horror is a genre that is done well in animation. With the ability to go beyond what is humanly-possible, the horror that animation can display is one-of-a-kind. I will go through 7 horror anime recommendations to add to your watch list. Happy Halloween.
#1 Paranoia Agent
One of my favorite horror anime is Paranoia Agent. It’s because it is truly the most horrifying, because it’s all based on human emotions. It’s an intense psychological thriller that is subtly terrifying. The premise is all about a serial killer on the loose who murders with a golden bat.
#2 Junji Ito Collection
Junji Ito is a horror manga legend, and has a couple of adaptions for his work. But of all of them, Junji Ito Collection has the most shock-factor. It’s a scary anthology series from Junji Ito’s manga(s). Must watch for horror fans.
#3 Dark Gathering
Underrated anime need more attention. Dark Gathering is the definition of underrated. It’s a terrifying series, following an unlikely group teaming up to take out spirits. As that may sound simple, it’s complex, and the more you know, the creepier it gets. Highly recommend.
#4 Magical Girl Site
Magical Girl Site isn’t your typical horror anime. It’s much more “horrific” rather than “horrifying”. We see a high school girl named Aya go through torture every day, until one day she stumbles upon a sacred power. Don’t be fooled though, there are very unsettling and creepy things every episode.
#5 Junji Ito’s Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre
Tales of the Macabre is basically just the 2nd part to Junji Ito Collection. There’s definitely some great episodes in here, that are terrifying. Anthology series, so you are free to pick and choose what episodes may interest you.
#6 Made In Abyss
This is a great anime series that takes a while to get to the point. But, as soon as it does, It gets very unsettling. It is yet another unconventional horror. Paranoia is in the atmosphere throughout the series of Made in Abyss, and there’s nothing like it. There’s no way to give a short explanation about this show, except that it does have a slower start. That said, give it a watch.
#7 Housing Complex C
Housing Complex C follows 2 young girls and the residents of a housing complex as they experience strange events happening all around them. Everything about this show is a bit unnerving. It’s unique, with some good scares. While It doesn’t have much popularity, there is no mistaking that this is 100% a horror anime to the core. Horror fans, put it on your watch list.
