OriginalFake was a brand created in 2006 by Brian Donnalley, or better known as KAWS. The brand was originally made to combat all of the counterfeit KAWS products. Specifically, combating the counterfeit of their rare, exclusive toy products. OriginalFake started out selling toys first, then moved onto clothing featuring KAWS characters.
OriginalFake seemed to be doing great, collaborating with many brands such as BAPE, MASTERMIND, and UNDERCOVER. Although, OriginalFake was met with an abrupt ending in 2013. There was one main issue that caused this ironically, counterfeits. Too many fake products swirled around, thus making OriginalFake go through an identity crisis and imposter syndrome.
KAWS still makes clothing to this day, in a way, OriginalFake never left. It’s just not the same as before, it’s evolved. I’ve always liked KAWS art, and his character is truly iconic. He’s one of my favorite artists because of how he took one character, and made it so viral. It’s almost like the character has a story, without even saying a word.
