A couple years back there was an app that exploded in popularity very fast because they knew what people wanted: free money. HQ Trivia would give away a cash prize everyday for competing against others in trivia questions in real-time. The hype for the game-show styled app has risen to great heights, then all of a sudden, it all came crashing down. On HBO Max, the HQ Trivia story “Glitch” tells all about what happened.
There were a number of factors that contributed to HQ Trivia’s downfall. One was the death of one of its co-founders, Colin Kroll, in December 2018. Kroll was a key figure in the company, and his death left a void that was difficult to fill.
Another factor was the rise of competition. Other trivia game apps, such as Gimkit and Trivia Crack, began to offer similar features to HQ Trivia, and some of them were even more popular. This made it harder for HQ Trivia to stand out from the crowd.
In addition, HQ Trivia was plagued by technical problems. Players often reported that the app crashed or that they were unable to connect to the game. This led to frustration and a decline in user satisfaction.
Finally, HQ Trivia was criticized for its aggressive marketing tactics. The app sent out a barrage of notifications to users, and it was accused of being too spammy. This alienated some users and made them less likely to play the game.
In the end, HQ Trivia was unable to overcome these challenges. The app shut down for good in February 2020, just three years after its launch.
