Michael Burnett, pro skater and the editor of the skateboarding magazine: Thrasher Magazine, created one of the most creative competitions ever to be seen. The competition is called King Of The Road.
The King Of The Road competition started in 2003. It’s meant to bring competition between different skateboarding sponsors such as Tony Hawks Bird House, using their skate teams. It’s a huge scavenger hunt done to showcase the skills of these professional teams, while also having loads of fun. Each one of the three teams are given a book with missions and challenges to complete in different cities. The skate team with the most points according to their books scores wins the competition.
The challenges that these skaters compete in are absolutely insane. From drinking pee, to grinding a rail that’s on fire, there’s no telling what challenges the skaters are in for before signing up. The book changes every year and the competition had been active almost every year since it’s inception in 2003.
Jake Phelps worked alongside Michael Burnett at Thrasher Magazine and also played a big part in King Of The Road. Unfortunately, Jake Phelps passed away in 2019 and ever since, King Of The Road has been put on hold. Although, in an interview with North done in 2020, Michael Burnett had said that King Of The Road will be back, but no frantic plans at the moment.
