There was a movie made in 1982 about a ghost, or Poltergeist, rather. The title of the movie fits it’s exact theme, Poltergeist. The movie follows a family that is haunted by paranormal happenings in the house (sort of like Paranormal Activity). The movie was pretty scary for the time that it was made. Although, the headlines from the movie weren’t about the movie.
The unfortunate truth is that most of the cast members died in random, bizarre ways. Some believe this curse was caused because real skeletons were used in the movie. Yeah, you heard that right, real skeletons were used on set because fake ones apparently were out of the budget. The actors were unaware of this while filming, with JoBeth Williams (Diane’s character) claiming “I assumed the skeletons were made out of plastic or rubber..”
Months after the first movie was released, a cast member was murdered. The oldest daughter in the movie, Dana, played by Dominique Dunn, was brutally strangled in her driveway which led to her passing away. This was the first death in the cast.
Directors thought it was a good idea to make a second film, because why not? Bad idea. There was an Exorcism done on set by a star of the second film, Will Sampson. Allegedly, the cast felt relieved that this happened, but in retrospect, it did nothing but piss off some spirits. Sampson later died of malnutrition and kidney failure a year after the release of the film.
Reverend Kane, the antagonist character starring In Poltergeist II: The Other Side passed away due to stomach cancer before the film hit theaters. Although, he was diagnosed before he was casted in the film.
The most shocking death to most, was of the iconic young star of the movie Heather O’Rourke (The little girl in front of the TV). She had a very unfortunate passing at the young age of only 12 years old. She passed away due to cardiac arrest and septic shock, due to a misdiagnosis. She passed away months before the final chapter of the movie was released, Poltergeist III.
Lou Perryman had a small role in the first Poltergeist. In 2009, he was brutally murdered by an axe in his own home. It’s pretty terrifying to see all of these deaths occur to cast members of this movie franchise. Also, even more terrifying that a new franchise of Poltergeist was released, that’s ballsy. There was one cast member, Richard Lawson, that survived a plane crash in which half of the people on board passed away.
Are these instances just coincidences? I don’t know. It’s very strange to see the passings of so many people in a short span of time, in disturbing ways of death. There very well might be a curse of the original Poltergeist Franchise. May those that passed away Rest In Peace, and I hope their families and friends have found peace past those occurrences.
