Robert Downey Jr. is back, but this time, he’s not just playing a hero – he’s playing the whole espionage game. HBO’s upcoming miniseries, “The Sympathizer,” takes viewers on a thrilling journey through the eyes of a double agent, and Downey Jr. steps into not one, but multiple roles to bring this complex world to life. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen, “The Sympathizer” tells the story of the Captain (played by an unknown Vietnamese actor), a communist spy embedded deep within the South Vietnamese army during the final days of the Vietnam War. After fleeing to the U.S. with his commanding officer, the Captain attempts to build a new life amongst a refugee community in Los Angeles. But his past clings to him like a shadow. He’s forced to continue feeding information to the North Vietnamese government, all while grappling with his loyalties and the ghosts of his past.
