The world is full of shock-value entertainment. It probably always has been, it’s just now under a microscope. It’s the same concept of outrage marketing: make people mad, get more impressions. The upcoming movie American Fiction does this concept beautifully with Black entertainment. The movie follows a black novelist named Monk who is mad that the establishment gains from the shock-value tropes of black people. Fueled by anger, he writes the most provocative book he can imagine; and it’s a success.
